Don’t be alarmed if you paid a lot of money for a Peloton Bike or Bike+ and it won’t turn on. There are a few simple steps you can take to regain power and get back to riding!
If your Peloton will not turn on, it is most likely due to a loose connection that needs to be reseated. Check connections at the power brick, the base of the bike, up under the resistance mechanism, and finally on the back of the display panel while your bike is plugged in.
These connections have been known to wiggle loose over time, but luckily, once you know where to look, they are very easy to reconnect.
WHAT IS PELOTON?
If you enjoy the competition and camaraderie of studio cycling classes and are interested in replicating that experience at home—where many people have moved their workouts these days—a Peloton Bike may be for you.
Becoming a member of the Peloton pack requires a financial investment of approximately $2,300 for the first year and nearly $500 each year after that. That’s just for the base model. These recurring costs for live-streaming and on-demand classes, however, make financial sense for a subset of indoor-cycling devotees.
Namely, those who typically take four or more Peloton-like studio classes a week may find the at-home bike and classes to be a superior value in as few as four months. If you have never considered a Peloton but are unsure whether an indoor-cycling class at the gym or a studio appeals right now, you may be weighing all your at-home options.
People who enjoy the Peloton enjoy the Peloton. (In fact, Peloton struggled to keep up with demand for its equipment during the pandemic, but demand has begun to wane as people return to the gym.) Previously lengthy delivery times have been reduced: the Peloton Bike and Peloton Bike+ are now expected to arrive in two to three weeks.
However, Peloton is no longer the only connected-indoor-cycling success story. We also tested nine Peloton alternatives that promise a similar overall experience, as well as a different way to use the Peloton app (or any indoor-cycling app).
We concluded that if you have your heart set on a Peloton Bike and all that comes with it, you’ll be happiest with a Peloton after assessing those bikes, taking dozens of classes, observing even more, and absorbing myriad motivational mantras.
It is excellent equipment overall, and for the indoor-cycling devotee, it is possibly a good value or even a bargain. (Still, you have to make and enforce your own good habits, and the bike becomes a shadow of its former self if you stop paying the $39 monthly membership fee.) There are other options that may better fit your budget, style, or goals.
To decide, you need to know yourself, what you want out of your bike and your workouts, and—perhaps most important—what you’re willing to go without. The Peloton Bike has a devoted following thanks to well-produced live-streaming and on-demand classes starring self-made celebrity instructors. Is it worthwhile to make the investment?
Possibly, especially if you’re used to paying a lot of money to spin studios on a regular basis and want something more convenient at home. Or perhaps you’re simply intrigued by Peloton’s offerings and are willing to make the financial commitment.
Many people, however, are likely to be put off by the Peloton Bike’s high initial and ongoing costs. After purchasing the Bike, you must continue to pay a $39 monthly subscription fee, or you will be limited to only three classes and a free-ride mode that displays only real-time data on the screen, with no leaderboard-inspired competition or record of your efforts.
WHAT ARE THE CONNECTIONS TO CHECK WHEN YOUR PELOTON WON’T TURN ON?
In no particular order, here are all of the connections you should investigate. Every Peloton owner will need to do some cycle troubleshooting at some point. It is possible that your bike will not start. Alternatively, you may notice a clicking sound coming from your pedals and wonder if you should be concerned.
Don’t be concerned. Because I’m going to give you solutions to the most common Peloton cycle issues in this blog post. Consider this your Peloton troubleshooting FAQ. Because, hopefully, whatever is bothering you about your bike, you’ll find answers here.
Before we get started, there’s one more thing to mention. If you’ve had your bike for less than a year, it’s still under warranty. So, if you’re having problems with it, don’t try to troubleshoot it on your own. Call Peloton or use their website to chat with customer service. Utilize your warranty while it is still valid.
1. Power plug and power brick
First things first, and I know it sounds obvious, but just make sure that your Peloton’s power supply is fully connected. This means:
- the power cord is plugged into the wall and
- the cord is fully connected to the power brick
The first point is simple enough: make sure you’re plugged into a working outlet! If you’re still not sure, try plugging in a different device to the same outlet. If that device turns on, you know the outlet is operational and can proceed.
The second point is one that many people seem to overlook. Your bike’s power supply cord comes with a power brick (see below), and the power supply cord can become disconnected from it, cutting power to your bike completely.
Your Peloton will not turn on if this cable is not properly seated or snug. If everything is connected correctly, you should see a faint green light on the power brick!

2. Power adapter at the base of the bike
The next place to look is at the back, at the bike’s base. This is where the power supply cord enters the base via an adapter. Your Peloton will not turn on if that adapter is not securely connected. To ensure that everything is snug, I would simply remove the adapter and reconnect it.
If you have the Bike+, this adapter has a white light that will illuminate if it is properly connected. Because the Bike version lacks this white light, you’ll have to assume it works once you connect it.
3. Connection up under the resistance mechanism
It’s now time to check under the resistance mechanism to ensure the power connection is secure. This is by far the most difficult connection to see and reconnect, so proceed with caution. If you have a small-handed child, they may come in handy during this step!
I recommend that you first grab a flash light or use the flash light on your smartphone to orient yourself under the resistance mechanism. On the left side of the bike, there are two connections. On the right side of the bike, there is a single UBC-C connection.
It is far more common for this connection to come loose on the Bike+ since the cable here isn’t really secured well. On the Bike model, the two connections have a protective covering and are locked into place. In either case, just confirm that these wires are connected before moving on.
4. Back of the display panel
You’ll be relieved to learn that this next connection is much easier to obtain. You should see wires connecting into the back of your bike just behind the touch display panel. Check to make sure that none of the wires have come undone.
Children can pull on these wires and jostle them loose. Your Peloton’s display will not turn on if they are not connected. When facing the back of the display on the Bike, connect the audio on the left and the power supply on the right.
Audio should be connected in the top port and the USB-C power cable should be connected in the middle port for Bike+ owners.

5. Above the brake shroud (Bike+ ONLY)
You have one more connection to check if you own the Bike+. This connection is located on the bike’s outside front, about the same height as the resistance mechanism, just above the brake shroud.
This is another UBC-C connection that can come undone from time to time. There are two ports here; connect your UBC-C cord to the top connection port.
HOW TO TURN ON THE PELOTON SCREEN?
Assuming you’ve checked all the above connections and made sure that they are snug, and you’re using a power outlet that works, let’s turn your bike on! On the back of the display you’ll find a grey power button, up at the top center of the panel.
You need to press and hold this button for about 5 seconds. After 5 seconds you should see the screen light up and start to load! That’s it, you’re back in business.
HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT WHEN PELOTON METRICS IS NOT WORKING?
First, let me explain what the Peloton metrics are. They are the numbers that you see on the screen when you’re riding. We’re talking
- speed or cadence
- resistance
- output
- distance
- calories
If Peloton is experiencing broadcast issues–for example, the screen freezing or high fives on the screen not working–the metrics will also go out. When you get the white spinning dot circle of death, it means they’re having broadcast problems.
It’s similar to the Apple rainbow beach ball or the Windows blue screen of death–neither of which is a good sign. Other times, it could be that Peloton has released a software update and you haven’t yet installed it.
While these updates are inconvenient, I’ve found that they usually resolve any metrics or other issues that I’ve been trying to resolve. Check the bottom right corner of your tablet to see if an update is waiting to be installed.
Another solution when the metrics go out. Exit the class you’re currently taking. Then, select it again. The bike will tell you that you have a class in progress. Just rejoin, and you should be good.
HOW TO FIX PELOTON HEART RATE MONITOR NOT WORKING?
This is a major issue for Peloton users. It focuses on the Peloton heart rate monitor that comes with the accessories package.
I’ll just say it: that chest strap heart rate monitor is a shambles. In fact, I mention it in my blog post about the best Peloton heart rate monitor. And the best HRM is the Scosche rhythm heart rate monitor, which I adore and reviewed in the preceding post.
HOW TO TROUBLESHOOT WHEN PELOTON PEDALS ARE MAKING A CLICKING SOUND?
If you’re ever spent time on the Official Peloton Members Facebook page–which is filled with negativity–then you know that lots and lots of people ask questions about clicking Peloton cycle pedals.
Guess what? It’s not your pedals. It’s most likely the cleats on the bottom of your cycle shoes. They need to be tightened. That’s it. All it takes is an Allen wrench to do the tightening.
PELOTON SUPPORT
If your screen isn’t turning on and you’re certain everything is connected properly, you should contact Peloton directly. There are a few options available here. The first step is to email them at support@onepeloton.com.
You can also contact them by phone at (866)-679-9129. The Peloton team is available from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. ET seven days a week. In my experience, Peloton support is extremely helpful, and I am confident they will resolve your issue.
PELOTON WARRANTY
Hopefully, this will not be necessary, but Peloton Bikes and the Bike+ all come with a Limited Home Use Warranty. You can also purchase an extended warranty if desired (which I always recommend for such an expensive product).
The Limited Home Warranty covers the touchscreen, various components, and pedals for up to 12 months. The bike’s frame is guaranteed for 5 years! You can read more about the warranty here.
TIPS TO PROTECT THE PELOTON SCREEN
- Always use a soft cloth to clean the peloton screen and never rub it too hard. Similarly, use a detergent that is free of harmful chemicals.
- The slot of the peloton must be cleaned with a brush, and the rush must always be rubbed gently. Furthermore, alcohol can be used to clean. Detergents are available on the market, but they contain hazardous chemicals.
- Third, always keep it in a safe place and out of reach of children, as children often hit it while playing, and sometimes the damage is so severe that the bike stops working and there is no other option but to buy a new one.
- Peloton is on the verge of damage if we do not connect it with a stable power supply. Use power strips to connect it with the power supply to protect it from the electric surge.
- Press the power button of the peloton screen gently as it will stop working if pressed with too much force.
CONCLUSION on Peloton Wont Turn On
A loose or incorrect connection is the most common cause of a Peloton not turning on. Check the following to resolve this issue:
- Check that the power outlet you’re using is operational.
- Make sure you’re plugged in and connected to a power source.
- Examine the power adapter at the bike’s base.
- Check the wires under the resistance mechanism to ensure they are connected.
- Ascertain that the connections at the back of the display panel are secure.
- Bike+ owners should check one more connection above the brake shroud.
When you’re certain that everything is properly connected, press and hold the power button on the back of the display for about 5 seconds. The screen should now be turned on. If you’ve followed all of these steps and your Peloton is still not turning on, you should contact support.
As a last resort, you can check the warranty on your bike to see what kind of coverage you have. I hope you found this useful. Were you able to reactivate your Peloton? Let me know what worked for you in the comments!
